“Bangor Welcomes The Malaga Ship”

The Bangor community is coming together to present The Malaga Ship: A Story of Maine & the Middle Passage, a powerful performance that weaves together history, art, and storytelling to shed light on Maine’s connections to the transatlantic slave trade.

On Sunday, October 5, at 3:00 PM, internationally acclaimed storyteller and performer Antonio Rocha will bring his riveting production, The Malaga Ship: A Story of Maine and the Middle Passage, to our community.

Through a powerful blend of narration, song, and movement, Rocha uses his entire body and voice to tell the story of the slave ship Malaga—one of many vessels that carried human lives across the Atlantic in the 1800s. Told poetically and from the ship’s perspective, this performance highlights the global reach and lasting impact of the slave industry.
