Bangor NAACP Change the Narrative Creative Works Contest

Stories shape how we see ourselves—and how others see us. Too often, those stories are written for us through labels, assumptions, or stereotypes that don’t reflect who we truly are. The Greater Bangor Area Branch NAACP invites community members to reclaim their voices and rewrite those stories through creative expression. Whether through poetry, visual art, or multimedia, this contest is an opportunity to challenge misperceptions, honor lived experiences, and share authentic narratives. Selected works will be displayed during our MLK breakfast program, where attendees will engage with the art and vote for their favorite pieces. Top entries will receive prizes and public recognition.

🎨 Reflective Prompt

Think of a label, inaccurate assumption, or story that society—or someone else—placed on you (e.g., “troublemaker,” “quiet one,” “lazy”).

  • What do they not see?

  • How do you reclaim your voice?

  • How do you define your story?

Create a piece that reclaims your voice and reflects your story—on your terms. Community members of all ages are invited to submit original creative works, including:
